Scholarships Available for Commack Students

High School students can get a break on college tuition through several opportunities this month.

The following scholarships are available to Commack students during the month of January:

Herff Jones Believe in You Scholarship and Principal’s Award

  • Nomination: two students
  • Criteria: leadership, community service, excellent grades
  • Sign up in the counseling center by Jan. 21 

Mid Island Club

 National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club

  •  Nomination: four students
  • Criteria: activities resume, short essay and transcript
  • Due in the counseling center by Jan. 25

Dante foundation

  • $5,000
  • Nomination: four students
  • Student must be of Italian descent (at least one parent)
  • Criteria:  Excellent grades and SAT scores, essay required
  • Nomination: four students
  • Due in the counseling center by Jan. 31 

The Links Incorporated

  • For African American students
  • Criteria: financial need, GPA 80 percent and above, SAT scores, activities resume, three letters of recommendation
  • Due to the counseling center by Jan, 31

Association of Fire Districts of the State of New York

“NED carter scholarship”

  • Nominations: four awards of $1,500
  • Must be related to a firefighter or be an explorer in the fire department
  • Criteria: financial need, three letters of recommendation, copy of student’s transcript, copy of parents’ tax return in a sealed envelope.
  • Due to the counseling center by Feb. 8

Buick Achievers Scholarship

  • Up to $25,000 per year
  • Must be majoring in one of the following: engineering, technology, design or business
  • Criteria:  community service, academics, financial need
  • Visit online -  buickachievers@scholarshipamerica.org
  • Online application must be submitted by Feb. 28

Commack Encore Scholarship

  • Nominations: four scholarships
  • Must be member of Commack Encore Booster Club
  • Criteria:  must be in either band, chorus, orchestra, guitar ensemble, or music theory.
  • Applicant does not have to be a music major.
  • Applications are on the counseling center’s website and in the counseling center.
  • Due to the counseling center by March 15.

Greater Long Island Running Club

  • Herb Grayson Memorial Scholarship, $1,500
  • Applicant must be involved in the Long Island running community. More information is available in the counseling center
  • Due to the counseling center by April 3 

According to the school district, all scholarships must be processed through the counseling center. Applicants should see Mrs. Tafone to pick up or hand in applications during first period, ninth period, study hall, early release, or 2:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Applicants should allow one week processing time for all private scholarships.
