School District Resumes Activities After Power Outage

School buildings sustained minor damage during storm.

The Commack School District will resume activities on Wednesday, after most buildings lost power for several days after Hurricane Irene battered Long Island.

All school activities, including sports practices and Tuesday night's public Board of Education meeting, were canceled Monday and Tuesday following the storm early Sunday.

Several school buildings joined the thousands of households and businesses that suffered prolonged power outages after the storm. Among them were , , , Cedar Road, , Old Farms and HUBBS Administration Center, according to District Spokesperson Brenda Lentsch.

Lentsch also said that while there were some fallen trees and limbs on school grounds and a few buildings sustained minor roof leaks, the storm did not cause any major damage to school grounds.

The Board of Ed meeting will be rescheduled for a later date, said Lentsch.

The 2011-12 school year will commence on Wednesday, Sept. 7 as scheduled.
