Schools Raise Money for Japan Tsunami Relief

District-wide fundraiser will benefit the Japan Tsunami Relief Fund through the Red Cross.

In light of the horrific devastation in Japan, the Commack School District is working to raise money to help with the earthquake and tsunami relief effort.

The fundraiser, called "Helping Hands Across Commack," lets students, parents and teachers in every school buy a paper hand for a minimum donation of $1, which they can personally decorate and display in the lobby of their school. All money raised will be donated to the American Red Cross.

The program not only helps the people of Japan, but also shows students how important it is to help those in need, whether in your community or halfway across the world.

"It teaches our children that you have to reach out to other communities," said Debbie Virga, chairperson for community relations for the District, who spearheaded the program. "They need to know the importance of giving."

Through the Red Cross, 91 cents of every dollar donated will go directly to the Japan Tsunami Relief Fund and help the people of Japan whose lives and homes have been devastated by the double disasters.
