Solar Panels Delivered to Schools Next Week

Installed on August 30, these panels will help reduce the energy needs of four district schools.

Solar panels are scheduled to be installed onto the roofs of Mandracchia/Sawmill Intermediate School, Burr Intermediate School, the middle school and the high school on Aug. 30, Brenda Lentsch, district spokeswoman, has told Commack Patch.

The panels will be delivered within a week and then installed in time for the start of classes.

The four roofs, as we mentioned in our preview article, are being modified as a part of the EXCEL grant program from New York state, which provides money for these types of improvements. District voters accepted the plan in 2008 and projects began last summer. Projects include the solar panels, smartboards and electronic security at school entrances.

Lentsch said the High School construction made the school a dangerous environment for students and the district decided not to offer a summer school program on the grounds. Students were sent to Half Hollow Hills, in Dix Hills and will be taking their August regents next week. This change saved the district $76,570, according to the 2010-2011 adopted budget.
