Students Shine at Tri-M Winter Recital

Students performed classic pieces by composers from all over the world.

The Tri-M music students gathered with Director of Music Paul R. Infante in the Little Theater of Commack High School Wednesday afternoon for their winter recital.

Guests were treated to performances of pieces dating all the way back to the 18th century, to more contemporary sounds such as American jazz bassist Slam Stewart's "3 O'Clock in the Morning."

Stewart's song served as the opening number, performed by Harrison Furlato, Jeremy Klewicki, Ross Kratter and Dillion Scott.  Not only did they breeze past every note, but they did so with style, reminiscent of the legendary jazz greats of the past. Furlato and company truly looked as if they were playing with Big Bad Voodoo Daddy at a lounge in downtown New York.

Next, soprano vocalists Nina Callahan, Amanda Branson, Meghan Mahoney and Kayla Neville effortlessly tackled selections from composers such as Italy’s Francesco Durante, Francesco Ciampi, Giuseppe Pucchini and Germany’s Robert Schumann.  The winner Alyssa Curcio also took the stage, singing Giuseppe Giordani's "Mio Ben."

Next came the pianos and violins.  Pianists Jacob Pincus and Jeff Ball appeared calm and collected as they nailed their renditions of American George Gershwin’s "Prelude II" and Russian Sergei Rachmaninoff’s "Prelude in C#minor."  Between piano performances was the very unique violinist duo of Angelo Gonzalez and Elena Smith, who performed Norwegian composer Johan Halvorsen’s "Passacaglia."

The last two performances included Austrian composer Franz Schubert’s "Auf Dem Strom" performed by James Spadoro, Eric Huckins and Dan Malinovsky, and American Don Gillis’s "Just a Closer Walk" performed by Sari Feinstein, Scott Aronin, Chris Zatorski, Kyle Labriola and Eric Huckins who was performing double duty with his French horn.  Huckins stole the show in his first performance, challenging Spadoro to sing loud or go unheard.
