Toaster Sets Off Fire Alarm, Forces Middle School Evacuation

Students and faculty allowed back in after 15 minutes, building deemed safe by fire chief.

A toaster caused an evacuation at Thursday, a school official said.

A fire alarm went off inside the school at around noon, causing students and teachers to evacuate. The alarm was set off by smoke detectors due to smoke caused by burning toast in the faculty room, according to a memo sent out by Principal Pamela Travis-Moore Thursday afternoon.

The students remained outside as firefighters inspected the building. After about 15 minutes, the fire chief deemed the building safe and the students returned to class.

"We commend all our students and staff for responding to the alarm so quickly and quietly and, in a word, responsibly," Travis-Moore said in the memo.  "Although no one was in any danger at any time today, everyone feels better having reaffirmed our safety precautions through this drill."

There were no injuries.
