Two Candidates Run for Board of Education Seat

Vice President Deborah Guber will run against challenger Daniel Fusco for the title of trustee.

Two candidates will vie for a seat on Commack's Board of Education during this year's school elections.

Deborah Guber, current vice president of Commack Board of Education, will run for re-election. She will face off against district resident Daniel Fusco, who handed in a completed petition to run for trustee on April 16. The petition required the signatures of at least 85 qualified school district voters.

Guber has served on Commack's Board of Education for the last six years.

Fusco is a lifelong Commack resident and district alumni Class of 1983. He has two children within the school district, students of Commack Middle School and Commack High School.  As a surety consultant and project manager, Fusco feels he has many skills he can bring to the table for the Commack School district.

Commack residents will have the chance to vote on their Board of Education representation, as well as , on May 15.

Stay tuned to Commack Patch through the school budget season as we introduce and get to know the Board of Education candidates.

I would not be concerned with him not being involved with the PTA! That's a good thing - they are sitting on the wrong side of the fence too. Speaking as a past class mother, we had to call everyone parent in the class (before they calls were computerized) and tell them that the PTA supports the budget and go out and vote yes! Where was the PTA voice when clubs and fields trips were taken away AFTER THE BUDGET PASSED ?????

Be careful ss commack. If you dare speak out against the machine you may be branded an outsider. It is not safe to have thoughts such as yours. lol. Seriously though, you bring up a valid point. It would be nice to have a candidate who has done more for the community and been more involved in our school system before he just declares that it is broken and can only be fixed by completely dismantling it. I am still voting yes on this budget. I don't want to see more things cut. My kids deserve more than that. I know this Patch crowd does not agree with me, but lucky for us there is a LARGE part of this community that does agree with me. So we shall see which side prevails come the budget vote.

PTA has generally supported the budgets and pushed hard, but quietly, for changes. But that pushing would get a lot of nods but little in the way of change. These days it seems like the 'public' process is mainly a big joke yet again. As to leaving Long Island, it has become very clear that the nimbyism, the corruption and massive waste is so deeply embedded that it would take a huge exodus before anything were to change. The bulk of the decent jobs are already long gone, leaving mainly lower paying 'service' jobs. When the new Suffolk County Exec took over, the first thing he did is lay off a bunch of workers so he could bring in his personal hacks. Now he has to lay off a lot more because of the hidden budget problems. And its clear that there is little rhyme or reason as to what positions go away. The downward spiral continues! EIther we leave or we go down too!
pbug56 April 25, 2012 at 12:23 PM
What are you really voting for? Do you think you really know what's in the budget? You don't. The vote in this district is a near joke. You vote for it, you just support the board, and it may well cut things you want. You vote against it, and the things that get cut will be things YOU don't want cut. They will come back with an alternate that may well be identical to what you rejected. Or worse. But they will never seriously cut back the ongoing multiple inflation salaries for teachers and bosses (except for a small pothole here and there).

Long Island education machine?
chefcristo April 25, 2012 at 01:15 PM
commack cares, i agree with your motive for voting yes; however you're being disillusioned into thinking that "...kids deserve more than that," and will get what they "deserve" if you vote yes. obviously our taxes will rise...but will our students really benefit from this increase? they'll continue to learn no matter what results the vote produce. that's what school is primarily about...learning...they'll continue to learn even if the budget is defeated, and i hope it is. commack and long island at large, can't handle another tax increase. many families are drowning in debt; adding another 2.6% increase just might be the third time under for them. this type of family pressure hinders the educational process. consider job losses, foreclosures, 2,3,4 extra jobs to maintain liveable mortgage, food, gas, medical payments, lack of at-home moms or dads because of these extra jobs leading to a lack of at-home supervision for school and other parental direction and many more undesirable outcomes with additional funds being funneled from households. THIS IS THE REALITY OF A YES VOTE. COMMACK (AND MOST OF LONG ISLAND) HAS MORE THAN THAN IT CAN BEAR AT THIS POINT. RAISING TAXES COULD JUST PUSH MANY OVER THE EDGE. WHERE DO THEY GO TO ESCAPE IT? KANSAS, NEBRASKA, THE DAKOTAS. DO YOURSELF AND ALL OF COMMACK A GREAT SERVICE. YOUR NO VOTE IS INVALUABLE. AND OUR (YOUR) KIDS WILL BE EDUCATIONALLY FINE IN THE LONG RUN.

Mr Fusco has been active in his community. He has volunteered time to coach CN little league teams and summer travel teams. Just because he doesn't belong to a committee on the PTA doesn't mean he isn't involved in his community. I haven't seen any of the male board members at any PTA event( maybe they have at a different school) or many PTA meetings. Have the prior male board memebers been actively involved in their child's school weather it's class "dad", join PTA committees or anything. Im gonna guess NO..... Mr Fusco has been actively involved with going to all school board meetings for several years. Finally he has decided that enough is enough and if no one else will stand up to try and make a change then he will. GOOD FOR HIM....GO GETT'EM DAN
pbug56 April 25, 2012 at 01:33 PM
My guess is I'll vote for Mr. Fusco. As to Peter W, I don't think he's quite in lockstep with the rest of the board, though he knows how to work with them. But unfortunately that rest of the board will still be there even if Mr. Fusco wins. Trying to run against certain members seems to have the potential to become very painful.
TMR23 April 25, 2012 at 01:38 PM
SS commack- maybe you should attend the meet the candidate night then you will be more informed about what each candidate has invested in his/her community. Don't just assume Dan hasnt been involved in the community, like i stated above he has been involved. Maybe not as much as others but he gave the time he had to each of his daughters, that more than many parents. and even if he hadn't done much for the community that doesn't mean he wouldn't make for a good candidate...what have you done and why don't you run? It takes a big committement to run and be on the board....looks to me he's willing to take on that committment and the heat that goes along with it...apparently you are not
ss commack April 25, 2012 at 06:55 PM
Wrong -Jeff Egan was on the budget comittee at North Ridge for years I have seen him at a number of school events over the years in all of the differant schools.
ss commack April 25, 2012 at 07:02 PM
I will be there to hear what they both have to say.
MJS April 25, 2012 at 08:42 PM
ss commack - This year the choice is b/w Guber or Fusco... how could you or anyone else vote for Guber knowing that she has done nothing to change things over the last 6 years she's been on the Board? Fusco couldn't possibly do any worse... besides he'll likely be a lame duck until 2 more Board members get replaced next year, unless Wunsch and Egan decide to man up against Masciello and Pennachio.
GM May 04, 2012 at 11:38 PM
Dan evidently has a backbone and is willing to step into the lion's den with that Board for the next year, and likely be the lone dissident. Take one seat this year, and win 2 next year, and year 3 will be a foregone conclusion. Go DAN!
josh c May 06, 2012 at 12:09 AM
Dont like Fusco much. If you have ever seen him in action he's pretty arrogant. Not a fan.
MJS May 06, 2012 at 03:50 AM
Josh C, ... Mr. Fusco is far from arrogant....and even if he was I'd vote for arrogance over incompetence any day...
josh c May 06, 2012 at 03:46 PM
MJS.. you can have your opinion and I can have mine. I'm just stating what I have seen first hand along with other people that I have spoken to. He is an arrogant man. Sorry if you don't like it.
Joseph Staiger May 06, 2012 at 03:57 PM
chefcristo... Good luck convincing the Commack public of this! Many people have more intelligence to realize that unfortunately, Dan Fusco is not nearly close to all you just called him. Mr. Fusco will find a way to cause chaos in the Commack Board of Education. If you don't believe me, you'll wish to detract your rant from above when Fusco either loses this election, or when he wins and finds some way to inaccurately execute this position. He's not a trustworthy man.
Concerned Comamck Citizen May 06, 2012 at 07:34 PM
I am waiting for Dan to explain how he will add programs, reduce taxes and reduce spending? If he can do that, we might be better off with him in the White House
Sara May 06, 2012 at 07:41 PM
The teachers don't "Put up" a candidate.
Sara May 06, 2012 at 07:43 PM
Once people are on the board they see what a difficult position it is. Imagine trying to satisfy all the community members and employees. All for nothing... completly volunteering their time. I disagree with the statement... "education is a business" JMHO
Sara May 06, 2012 at 07:48 PM
Yes.. lets see how Dan answers at meet the candidate night. It is easy to ask questions from the audience but not so easy to have real solutions and answers from the stage.
Sara May 06, 2012 at 07:52 PM
Also... did everyone hear Dr. James explain that since our average home price is less than Huntington for example... the district does not receive as much as Huntington even if we had the same tax rate... example. 2.6% of 100,000 is less than 2.6 % of 200,000 if that were the comparison of Commack and Huntington property values.
Michael May 06, 2012 at 10:07 PM
SO, KNOWING THAT AND BEING PAID AS HIGHLY AS HE IS, HE SHOULD BE SMART ENOUGH TO SPEND LESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Michael May 06, 2012 at 10:14 PM
You sound like Commack Daddy, but I think hes gone
Michael May 06, 2012 at 10:15 PM
Dont forget, anyone not pro Board or budget or who ask questions is arrogant. Board likes their lambs ready for slaughter
Michael May 06, 2012 at 10:16 PM
What struck you as arrogant Josh? You seem to have a vivid memory of arrogance, fill us all in.
Michael May 06, 2012 at 10:19 PM
Well, lets see. I know what isnt the answer. Raise taxes to pay for wage increases, give additional perks to the Superintendant while apologizing for laying off teachers, and cutting programs for the children they so tearfully claim to put first. Thats how not to do it sara. VOTE NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Commack honored as one of 2012 Top 100 Schools in the Nation! And it does so while keeping it's cost per pupil right near the State average!! Current Board, Superintendent, Teachers, Staff, Students and Parents are to be Thanked and Congratulated!!! Our Program and this fine Educational Community must not be decimated by the uninformed and short-sighted!
