Commack Finishes Season Undefeated

The Cougars beat Northport Saturday, 28-23.

“Undefeated, undefeated!” shouted an ecstatic group of Commack varsity football players after they beat Northport 28-23 Saturday afternoon, finishing the season 8-0.

There have been only two other times in Commack history, in which the team was undefeated going into the playoffs. The first was in 1966, and the second was about 30 years ago, Coach Joe Reggio estimated.

Saturday’s game was one of the closest matches for the Cougars, but the offensive line drove hard in the second half with touchdowns by Josh Valentin, Will Monroy and Matt Recek.

There were several times during the game when the Northport Tigers came clawing back to sneak up on Commack’s lead, but the Cougars held their own to the end.

“I’m so proud of you guys. You all deserve it. You worked for it. We earned it. Nobody believed it. Now, they believe it,” Reggio told the team after the win.

Valentin, who serves as one of three captains on the team, said that he had a feeling the team could pull off a 8-0 season, but was overwhelmed when the final score proved it.

“Right now, when it actually happens, it’s just unexplainable. We worked hard. We just blasted through the season one by one and it feels great. It’s just amazing,” he said.

Commack is off to the playoffs next weekend, where the players hope to keep up their winning streak.

“We’re going to keep it going,” Valentin said.
