Commack Little League Advances to State Championship

Commack 9-10 yr old Little League defeats Massapequa Coast 5-1.

Commack defeated Massapequa Coast for the New York Section 6 Championship Title 5-1 on Tuesday evening and advance to the State Championship Tournament this weekend in upstate New York.

With runners on second and third Johnny Pohlman scorches a two run double to give his team an early 2-0 lead. Later on in the inning Commack managed to score two more runs both off singles ending the first inning 4-0.

Kyle Lagrutta led his team on the mound for Commack. In the first inning, with only one out, Massapequa threatened with the bases loaded after a double and a hit by pitch. Lagrutta didn't lose focus and ended up getting out of the inning with little damage by Massapequa.

"Kyle started a little soft but came out strong after that first run in the beginning of the game." Coach Zoly said.

Lagrutta ended up with six strikeouts on the day including two 1-2-3 innings as well as keeping his team in the lead throughout the game.

The only other run scored in this matchup was in the second inning. Commack managed to score one more run off Massapequa's pitcher on a run scoring double by Rosenlicht.

Five runs was all Commack needed to be victorious. In the bottom of the sixth Johnny Pohlman stepped foot on the mound to close the game out and bring his team to the state championship. Pohlman was lights out pitching a solid 1-2-3 inning of his own. 

"Our closer was incredible today, but it really was an entire team effort to get where we are," Zoly said.

Commack is heading upstate this weekend to compete in the State Championship Tournament.
