Commack South Falls to Massapequa Coast

Commack South lost to Massapequa on Monday, ending their dreams of States play.

On Tuesday, Commack South fell to Massapequa Coast 8-2 in Little League's Long Island Championship game, ending the team's run for the state championship.

The first three innings of the game were intense as both starting pitchers, Commack's Peter Kotsovolus and Massapequa's Bobby Honeyman took complete control of the batters.

Kotsovolus allowed only a walk and a single in his first three innings as he seemed to have the Massapequa batters scratching their heads.

The forth inning is where we saw some life from both sides offense. Commack's Paul Britt reached first on an error by catcher Frank Patara, and Nick Perullo was walked by Honeyman. Honeyman would fight back to get two pop outs to end the inning while stranding two runners on base.

The bottom of the fourth inning seemed to be the first time either team was really in striking distance as three straight singles by Honeyman, Patrick Healy and Alex Cosenza had the bases loaded with only one out.

Paul Britt, the previous SS came in on relief and struck out the next to batters to end the inning. The Commack fans and players had breathed a sigh of relief as they watched their new pitcher walk off the mound having left the bases loaded and not allowing a run.

Heading into the bottom of the fifth inning the game was tied at 0. Britt took the mound again after his two strike out performance in the last inning. Britt facing the top of the order let up a lead off single to Nick Breslin who hit a shot right up the middle. Massapequa had figured out the Commack pitcher and continued to hit freely off the young reliever.

Commack had not lost a game before playing Massapequa and didn't want to start. Commack never gave in and came out in the sixth inning and after a pair of walks and singles by John Bopp and Peter Kotsovolus had shrunk the deficit to three.

The game ended at 8-2 and Massapequa Coast as Long Island's best.

"Take nothing away from Massapequa, they played great today" said Commack Coach Phil Russo.
