Commack Girls Basketball Coach Scores St. John the Baptist Gig

The coach recently led the team to the semi-finals in the Suffolk AA playoffs.

Commack Varsity Assistant Girls Basketball Coach Bruce Haller will be playing for the Cougars next year, but not in Commack. The Newsday Suffolk Coach of the year was recently hired for the same position by St. John the Baptist in West Islip.

Haller has coached for five years at Commack and led the team to a 16-3 record, which put the girls in the Suffolk AA playoffs this past season. The team made it to the semi-finals, but fell to top-seeded North Babylon by just two points.

Haller was also the head coach of Commack's girls junior varsity team.

St. John the Baptist finished 15-12 and lost in a NSCHSAA semifinal to St. Anthony’s and then in the first round of the CHSAA state championships to Bishop Ford, according to Newsday.

Ted Oberg, who had been the coach at St. John the Baptist since 2000 brought the team to two CHSAA state championships in 2007 and 2008 and won six NSCHSAA league titles, including five consecutive crowns from 2004-2008, according the school.
