Cougars Scoreboard: Baseball Sweeps Ward Melville, Softball Pounds Brentwood
Varsity sports stats for the week of May 7-May 13.
Baseball: The Cougars sweep of Ward Melville, like any good team, was built around three strong pitching performances. After winning 5-2 in the series opener on Monday, Mike Sparacino and Rob Rose fired back-to-back shutouts in a pair of 3-0 victories on Tuesday and Thursday. The trio of victories has Commack sitting in first place in League I, though they will await the outcome of this week's series between Patchogue-Medford and Ward Melville before they celebrate first place. If Ward Melville can take two of three, the Cougars will clinch first place, and the Patriots will also clinch a playoff spot of their own.
Softball: Commack's high-powered offense pounded out 29 runs in just five innings against Brentwood on Thursday in a 29-1 victory. They are currently in third place in League I at 11-4 with five games remaining on their schedule, including a matchup with first place Sachem East.
Boys Lacrosse: The lacrosse team notched just their fourth victory of the season, defeating Copiague, 10-8, Tuesday afternoon. On Thursday, David Murphy had five goals in a losing effort at home against Bay Shore, 17-6. They are now 4-7 in League I and are limping towards the finish line.
