Feat of the Week: Gowins Runs Wild

St. Anthony's back records second-best day in program history.

Everyone pointed toward big things for the reinvented St. Anthony's offense.

Everyone said Jordan Gowins would shine in the new system.

But what happened Saturday in Westchester went beyond hyperbole. Gowins, a junior running back, rushed for a career-high 298 yards and three touchdowns on 18 attempts as St. Anthony's ran past host Stepinac, 31-14.

Gowins' big day was the second-best rushing performance in program history. Only former Penn State star Matt Hahn has had a bigger day for the Friars when he ran for 352 yards against Holy Trinity in 2003.

Gowins averaged 16.5 yards per carry against Stepinac, which included a 94-yard breakaway that gave the Friars a 28-14 edge early in the fourth.

Gowns leads all Long Island rushers with 609 yards and 7 TDs in three games.

And Gowins has done it all on the road. St. Anthony's plays its home opener Friday at 7 p.m. against Staten Island rival Farrell.

The spread offense installed during the off-season was built with Gowins, a Bellport native with a football pedigree, in mind. We're just three games into 2013, but there's no doubt it's working.
