Sports Notebook: Week of April 22 to April 29

Cougars Baseball and Softball contendors for league titles.

The Cougars varsity baseball and softball teams came out strong after spring break, securing multiple wins, pushing the former to tie for the top spot in the league.

Baseball: Chris Baltera and Greg Andrews paced the Cougars offense to three victories in as many days this week, taking a pair of games from Longwood before beating up on Brentwood Wednesday, 12-5. They are now tied with Ward Melville for the top spot in League I at 7-3.

Softball: The Cougars picked up a pair of victories of their own following Spring Break. Paige Swantek capped off a 9-8 victory over Whitman on Monday after falling behind 7-0. The next day, Commack blitzed Central Islip, winning 16-0 to improve to 7-3 in League I, a game behind Longwood.

Boys Lacrosse: Brandon Cook scored the game-winning goal with 1:36 to play, his fourth of the game, to edge Patchogue-Medford, 8-7, on Tuesday. The win improved the team's league record to 2-6 in League I and 4-6 overall.

Girls Lacrosse: In their first game after the break, the girls lacrosse team was hammered by first place Northport, 22-5. Melissa Lobacarro scored a hat trick for the Cougars, who dropped to 4-6 overall.
