St Anthony's Girls Basketball Beats Sacred Heart, 58-27

Friars coach Ken Parham pulls starters after opening game with 20-0 run.

Coach Ken Parham and the S girls basketball team were expecting a four-quarter battle Sunday when Nassau-Suffolk CHSAA rival Sacred Heart Academy arrived in South Huntington.

No one could have predicted it would be over after just one tremendous run. The Friars opened the game with a 20-0 spurt and never looked back in a 58-27 win over visiting Sacred Heart.

Sacred Heart (8-3 overall, 3-2 CHSAA) entered the game with just one league loss to powerhouse St. John the Baptist. But the , with a big front line and accurate shooting, simply dominated. St. Anthony's already once.

Heroes:  Sophomore Johanna Impellizeri, a 6-foot center, led team with 12 points and 7 rebounds. Older sister Micki Impellizeri added 11 points, 4 rebounds and 4 blocks. Guard Kerrin Maurer also had 11 points.

Turning Point: It's the rarest of feats on the basketball court -- shutting out an opponent for an entire quarter. That St. Anthony's did it to open the game was all the more impressive. The Friars led 20-0 after one quarter and Parham emptied his bench not long after.

Quotable: "Our starters played less than a quarter," Parham said. " I'm surprised. They're 3-2 in the league. They just cane out flat."

Bottom Line: St. Anthony's already  once and has won nine straight since a . Parham, in his second season directing the Friars but a well-regarded coach with a deep resume, likes the direction this team is taking. The Friars are building toward a special season.

Key Stat: The Friars got scoring from 8 of 10 players.
