After The Fire, Nonprofit Imparts Illegal Housing Lessons

Maryanne Fitzsimons of Commack lost her daughter Kerry Rose on Jan. 21, 2012 to a fire in a student rooming house near the campus of Marist College. On Wednesday night, Fitzsimons -- who has since launched the Kerry Rose Foundation to work towards residential fire safety and awareness -- attended the meeting of the Stony Brook Concerned Homeowners to deliver a first-hand experience of exactly the kind of tragedy the organization hopes to avoid as it works to eliminate illegal and unsafe college boarding houses in the Stony Brook community.
