Crooked Hill Road Farm Stand Opens Friday

Carla's Farm Stand, located on Crooked Hill Road in Commack, will officially open June 28.

The farm stand has been around for almost seven years, said Keith DeMartino, who runs the farm stand with Carla.

The local stand has become a Commack favorite for corn an other produce.

"Corn is the biggest seller because it's fresh picked every single day," DeMartino, who picks the vegetables himself from Riverhead and the North Fork, said.

The farmer said that consumer awareness of pesticides and other chemicals has helped boost the local business in recent years.

"A lot of people want local stuff. They don't want pesticides on their food that you get in the grocery store," he said.

The farm stand will have a new neighbor this summer - a trucking inspection site next door. However, time will tell if the station will be good or bad for the farm stand.

"We don't know yet. The truckers may want to get some corn so that could be good, but if there's traffic from the trucks getting backed up, that may be a problem," DeMartino said.

While corn is the best-selling item, locals can also find Long Island potato chips, tomatoes, other produce and yard decorations.
