Car Forced Into Commack Diner, Driver Flees

A parked vehicle was forced into the front of Premier Diner in Commack early Friday afternoon when another driver crashed into the car and took off.

Fred Kelm was about to enjoy lunch with his wife, Delores, after leaving Sloan Kettering medical center for his cancer treatment, when they heard a loud crash.

"Everyone in the diner heard the crash. My husband went outside to see what it was and when he came back he said 'Well, that's it,'" Delores said.

Fred found his Mercury Grand Marquis LS on the diner's sidewalk. The front of the vehicle was smashed into the front of the diner.

"Thank god no one was sitting in that booth," Helen Georgatos, who runs the diner with her husband, Peter, said.

Sharon Niggemeir, who witnessed the crash, said the driver was parked and then reversed her vehicle and hit the Kelm's car, which forced it into the building.

No one was injured in the crash.

"Why take off?" Delores asked. "We're not going to blame anyone if it's an accident, but why leave?"

Police said that they have the license plate of the driver and are locating her.
