Commack High School Drops Significantly in U.S. News Rankings

Commack falls from No. 18 to No. 60 in New York State.

Commack High School took a severe dive this year within the U.S. News and World Report high school rankings.

In 2012, the school was ranked No. 18 in New York State. The rankings published Tuesday, marked Commack at No. 60 out of 1,149 high schools in the state. Last year, Commack High School was ranked No. 1 in Suffolk County. This year, it fell slightly to No. 3 behind Cold Spring Harbor (No. 1) and Harborfields (No. 2).

Commack High School also drastically fell within the national rankings, from No. 95 in 2012 to No. 464 in 2013.

U.S. News and World Report said its rankings are determined by college readiness, math and English proficiency and student-to-teacher ratio.

New York State Regents test scores determine proficiency in English and math, according to the publication. Commack High School is 99 percent proficient in both English and math, the report states.

A school’s college readiness index is based on AP and IB exam participation rates and percentages of students passing at least one exam. The index also determines which medals will be awarded to the top scoring schools.

Last year, Commack received a college readiness index of 74.2. This year, the school came in with an index of 47.1, with an IB participation rate of 50 percent.   In its student to teacher ratio, Commack is recorded as having an average of 14 students to every one full-time teacher.

Despite the fall in rankings, Commack High School was still awarded a gold medal, according to the data published Tuesday.
