Deborah K. Herman Named To Long Island Cares Board Of Directors

Commack native joins Long Island food bank

As is typical of a new year, most companies gradually begin hiring fresh employees.

But with 2011 less than two weeks old, Deborah K. Herman has already got a new title to add to her resume: Board of Directors for Long Island Cares, Inc. - The Harry Chapin Food Bank.

The Commack resident was named to the Hauppauge-based nonprofit's board in late December. She joins 23 fellow board members who hail from all corners of commerce, including supermarkets, newspapers, and law firms.

The appointment sounds like a perfect match: Long Island Cares, founded 31 years ago, works tirelessly to bring surplus food to the hungry. Herman, as the founder and president of magazine publishing company DKH Communications, puts out Building Long Island eight times each year. Launched in 2006, the magazine covers the real estate and development markets on Long Island and features a nonprofit organization based on Long Island in each issue.

"I'm grateful for the opportunity to work with the Harry Chapin Food Bank to help diminish hunger on Long Island and to extend Building Long Island's commitment to making this a better place for all of us to live," Herman said in a release.

Herman isn't a total newcomer to the not-for-profit scene, either, having been honored at the American Cancer Society's Women of the Year event in 2010.
